Shorts progress again

Tada! I have my first pair of… SHORTS!

There’s still a couple adjustments I want to make before moving on. I think I took in the waist too much. It fits, but I’d like a little extra room. The crotch also ended up a bit high XD;; I’ll have to figure out how to fix that.

I’m glad the flash from the camera didn’t shine through the fabric. It seems thick enough, but I’m still paranoid. I might put lining on the inside.

Next up, I’m going to tackle the zipper and button part!

Shorts, part way there

I realized I haven’t been working on my cosplay the past couple weeks, so I started working on the shorts again! I decided to use a double layer of fabric, otherwise they might be really see-through. I have all 4 pieces cut out, which are really 2 pieces of fabric each, sewed together as one. Then, I sewed 2 pieces together to form the back and front of the shorts. (The front isn’t completely sewed together, to leave room for a zipper.)

I pinned the front and back together so I could try it on. I think I left too much seam allowance, so I’ll have to take it in a little. The waist is too big!

Next up: sew front and back together, sew on belt loops, put in button and zipper, create pockets

First attempt, failed

It seems my sewing machine and the Gabardine fabric just don’t mesh with each other. I tried adjusting the settings on my machine, and I still end up with this problem:

The needle ends up catching onto thread in the fabric and pulling it, causing these weird scrunched lines. I also tried using my hands to make the fabric taut as it went under the needle, which helped, but didn’t solve the problem. It’s unfortunate because I made good progress too:

I probably should have tried different needles too, but I don’t have enough Gabardine fabric to keep trying. I think I’ll stick with a fabric I’m familiar with and get some Kona cotton.
